How the Construction Syndicate in Sarasota gets its chosen ones elected
It would be hard to find a clearer example of how county-wide ("at-large") voting works to move the political class farther from the people and closer to the moneyed special interests than one month in the fundraising of Dr. Joe Neunder.
Neunder, a Venice, Florida chiropractor, last year declared his candidacy for the District 4 Sarasota County Commission seat soon to be vacated by Alan Maio. The development community - that tight band of developers, builders, contractors, bankers, lawyers and Realtors -- couldn't have been more pleased. Hadn't his service on the Planning Commission proven him to be "compliant?"
Joe has received over $95,000 from the glad hands of the Neals, Bendersons, Boones, Jensens, Baileys, Gabberts, along with many of their wives, siblings, and assorted hangers on, who apparently believe the backbone of Sarasota is so fractured that only Dr. Neunder can fix it.
How does a candidate not blessed by this syndicate of self-enriching growth-mongers stand a chance in a county-wide election? Hence the need for single member district voting.
Just look at the developer dollars that poured in over one 30-day period, Sept. 1-30, 2021:
