The Sarasota County Republican Party leadership has a problem: They failed to sell the lie that citizens were better off voting countywide for commissioners rather than by individual district.
Since most of the issues commissioners face are local – traffic, unwanted development, infrastructure needs – people were not fooled.
The party of Lincoln should have remembered the statement often attributed to him: “You can fool all the people some of the time and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time.”
Amazingly, the morally bankrupt local leadership has been fighting this issue for over four years. They forced the question back on the ballot, cleverly worded to fool voters into believing that a “yes” vote on the measure “… allowing voters to vote for all five County Commissioners …” would increase the voice of voters, rather than reduce it, which was the goal.
They lost again, even with dark money spending hundreds of thousands on false ads, robocalls and texts.
The party’s problem is not Democrats, but Sarasota County leadership and commissioners whose primary loyalty is to developers and special interest groups.
